Family Doctors LLC has had the privilege of taking care of patients from the North Shore for over 50 years, when Dr. Robert Bessom first brought Family Medicine to Swampscott. From these humble beginnings, Family Doctors has grown and evolved over the years into a state-of-the-art, patient-centered “Medical Home”.
Today, under the leadership of our medical director, Dr. Peter Barker, we seek to provide compassionate longitudinal and urgent care to our patients on the North Shore. We recently completed a multimillion dollar renovation and upgrade to our building in Swampscott. We are proud to offer modern exam rooms, updated offices, exercise space, and a community meeting space.
Although we have made significant upgrades to our facility, our mission remains the same- to delivery high quality, patient-centered, compassionate care to children and adults.

Study after study has proven that patients receive higher quality care when they are evaluated by students and their faculty teachers.
Many of the doctors and nurse practitioners at Family Doctors enjoy working with student learners because we know it makes us better providers and presents us an opportunity to enrich the lives of the next generation of medical learners.
During your visit to Family Doctors, you may be asked if you are interested in being interviewed by a medical student or NP student, in addition to your provider. There is absolutely no obligation or pressure to be seen by one of our students, and if you are not interested, just say so and you will be seen by your provider only. However, if you are interested, you are encouraged to share your story with our students and help “teach” them along their journey. We find that students often learn more from patients than they do from us!
